The Pressure on Cherokee Land

During Nanyehi’s lifetime, land cessions, warfare, settlement, and shifting alliances transformed this region. The struggle did not end with her death: decades later, U.S. removal policy forced thousands of Cherokee people west on what is remembered as the Trail of Tears.
